One point that must be made regarding the new VAIO TZ is all the preparation that went into making a device unparalleled in both design and technology. Among the many features sure to impress users, one that stands out is the exquisite LCD display. The VAIO TZ series has an LCD with LED backlight which allows for thinner screens. With the VAIO G we tried to make the display as lightweight as possibleEwhile simultaneously decreasing power consumption, which would increase the amount of time the VAIO could be run on its battery. This time with the VAIO TZ our goal was to make the display as beautiful as possible,Efocusing on brightness and colour. The engineer responsible for the LCD display, Kiyohito Fujita, had this to say about picture quality.
Fujita: The LCD display for the new VAIO TZ was polished more than any display to date with colour purity at an NTSC ratio of 72%. By comparison, VAIO TX series was around 50%. If you look at the actual screen I think youll see the difference in picture quality. The real problem with mobile PCs is trying to make the display brighter without increasing power consumption. On LCD displays for desktop PCs, brightness and contrast can easily be increased by darkening the colour filter and increasing the backlight, but this method just isnt feasible for mobile PCs, which need to be able to conserve power when running on a battery. This was the toughest hurdle we faced in developing the display for the VAIO TZ. |

The LCD display on the new VAIO TZ is 20% brighter than the VAIO TX. This was made possible by the work Fujita did for the VAIO G and the technology which enabled it to conserve power. However, because the VAIO TZ is darker in colour , it meant the display wasnt bright enough, leaving images lacklustre. To compensate for this, Fujita tried placing the light from an LED in the front while making sure as little light as possible was lost, which improved brightness.
Fujita: First, the source of light for the backlight is LED, which has improved by leaps and bounds in recent years, so we had no qualms about using the most state-of-the-art one available. Next, we looked at many things such as the reflective sheet, a derived optical board to equally light the entire surface of the screen, a prism to concentrate light, a diffusion sheet to uniformly disperse the LED light, and the liquid crystal cells of the front panel. We wanted to see how much light was being lost taking all these parts used to make the panel into consideration. After running exhaustive tests and making numerous calculations, we determined that the design we now have was the best possible design. And based on these results, we made several prototypes for each internal part, with the goal of achieving near perfection. The end result is a brightly lit backlight with the same amount of power consumption as VAIO TX, but which is 1.8 times brighter. |

In this way we increased brightness without impairing battery life, and made an LCD display for the VAIO TZ which has colour purity unlike any mobile PC that has come before. During the demonstration, everyone who saw the sample images of fruits and meats said the food looked delicious. It goes without saying that pictures of friends and family will look better than ever. Fujita had this to say about the unprecedented technology that went into making a display with such resolution that it can literally show the vigour of youth.
Fujita: In an effort to improve colour output, gradation along the gamma curve was adjusted (gamma being the linear luminance of RGB values). In order to achieve optimum colour for all gradations, adjustments were made to every possible internal circuit. To make this panel our most beautiful ever, we actually manufactured gamma. By fine tuning the colour output to match the panels capabilities, hard to define colours such as skin tones look exceptional. I hope customers will go to their nearest retailer and look at the actual screen for themselves. I think people will be particularly impressed if they are able to upload a picture theyve taken with their own digital camera and view it on this display. I hope everyone has the opportunity to experience the vividness of this display. I think people will be surprisingly moved by how beautiful it is. |
